In a Mid Suffolk District Council by-election, held on June 2nd, Anne Killett the Green Party candidate won a well-deserved though close victory over Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Labour opponents.
The win, although by only 2 votes after a recount, was reflective of a strong committed local candidate with a large and enthusiastic support group behind her.
Anne said afterwards “I am delighted to have the opportunity to help everyone in the communities that I love, after living here for 26 years. I aim to follow the other Green councillors in providing active representation and keeping people informed.”
Because the by-election resulted from the resignation of the previous Conservative councillor due to his “significant differences of opinion with the strategies and the way Mid Suffolk District Council conducted their affairs”, the way the Council is being run by the Conservative administration was a major issue throughout the four-week long campaign.
Green Group Leader Councillor Andrew Stringer added: “We welcome Anne to our team, and know she will be working hard for the people of Barking, Somersham and all seven villages. It’s the first time the Green Party has contested this ward at the District level and I’d like to thank all our members and supporters who have worked so hard assist Anne in her success. The recently-elected new Conservative leader has promised the council will be run in an open and transparent way, and I’m glad we have another strong local voice to hold the council to account.”
